Dear Naturopath: Can you help me?

I have always thought that my eczema must be caused by something either food allergy related or environmentally related.  I was allergic to cow’s milk as a child so I always thought that must be a trigger.  I’ve cut it out several times during my adulthood so far with limited results.

In my quest for answers, I turned to a lovely local Naturopath.  This type of holistic approach to body healing really makes sense to me.  I also enjoy that I am paying for the service (although I get reimbursed by my benefits) so the service I get is amazing.  My first “intake” appointment was on Sept 13, 2010, it was almost 2 hours of chatting about my medical history, problems to address, ect. I felt fabulous after.

Two weeks later I went back for a review of my “case”, it was essentially her analysis of my health and goals on how to achieve optimum health through the incorporation of naturopathy concepts.  As far as my eczema was concerned, she suggest we start with some IgG antibody testing or just an allergy blood test (see: Rocky Mountain Analytical) .  This was just what I wanted so I followed her instructions to eat as many of the food on the list they gave her twice in a two week period prior to testing.  The premise of course is that you might get a false negative to an allergen if you do not consume it within two weeks of the test.  The test was easy and involved pricking my finger and placing blood on three little sample strips.  I did it at home and put it in the mail, as directed by my naturopath.

So 3 weeks after this come the results; I am allergic to everything I love but surprisingly not overly to dairy.  Here is the little wallet card print out of my results:

My IgG Gllergy Test Results - October 2010

So, essentially the Class IV and greater are to be eliminated (Yup, good bye eggs) and the class III are to be only consumed maximum once every 4 days.

In desperation to help my eczema I started this elimination diet….

Medical Doctors and Eczema Help

My whole life has revolved around seeing different medical professionals to help “cure” me of my eczema.  I should add that I am an army brat, so I haven’t had a consistent doctor for more then 5 years ever.  I have never had any luck with dermatologist and up until earlier this year had decided never to see one again…. my experience has always been something like this:

1) Walk into the clinic.

2) Strip off (well, only for the “good” ones who want to see the full extend of the problem), and wait for the doctor.

3) Doctor comes in, takes a look usually says, “wow, that’s pretty bad”, discuss the eczema symptoms, family history, ect.

4) Get once again diagnosed with eczema probably cause by heredity and get a script for some kind of steroid cream to help tame the symptoms.  Oh, and not to forget the latest sample of whatever moisturizing cream/wash/lotion the last pharmaceutical company has given them.

Great, thanks for all that mister/misses doctor.

See this is why I just don’t bother with dermatologists, if you don’t have cancer or something to cut off and analyze they don’t care.  They are not a solutions based field, just a get onto the next patient and have a good day type of doctor.

My current family doctor of 5 years has been very understanding (well, as much as she can) and has been very generous with offers for derm referrals and of course the latest steroid cream to “help me” out.

What is Eczema?

Its pure HELL and exceptionally itchy!

Seriously though, a quick search on google will generally tell you its a a general term for skin inflammation.   Its an overused term in my opinion whereby anyone with some dry skin will complain about eczema (yeah, its a sore spot for me considering what I have gone through).

I love the picture Wikipedia has here: Wikipedia – Eczema, its a picture of someone with eczema on the hands.

I do enjoy the following explanation of cause on wikipedia:

Cause

The hygiene hypothesis postulates that the cause of asthma, eczema, and other allergic diseases is an unusually clean environment. It is supported by epidemiologic studies for asthma.[7] The hypothesis states that exposure to bacteria and other immune system modulators is important during development, and missing out on this exposure increases risk for asthma and allergy.

While it has been suggested that eczema may sometimes be an allergic reaction to the excrement from house dust mites,[8] with up to 5% of people showing antibodies to the mites,[9] the overall role this plays awaits further corroboration.[10]

So, if I have this right….. they have no clue.  It’s correlated to some other conditions such as asthma, allergies and has some genetic component.
